MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID (MHFA)
WAHBH focus on three pillars in order to educate, develop and support our Mental Health First Aiders.
1. Delivery of MHFA, this can consist of 2 day, one day or half day courses.
-
2 Day CourseOur two day course qualifies you as a Mental Health First Aider. Mental Health First Aiders have: • An in depth study of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support - whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix Through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan. Everyone who completes the course gets an MHFA manual to keep and refer to whenever they need it, and a certificate to say they are a Mental Health First Aider.
-
1 Day CourseOur one day mental health awareness and skills course qualifies you as an MHFA Champion. MHFA Champions have: • An understanding of common mental health issues • Knowledge and confidence to advocate for mental health awareness • Ability to spot signs of mental ill health • Skills to support positive wellbeing Through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, the course is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan. Everyone who completes the course gets an MHFA manual to keep and refer to whenever they need it, and a certificate to say they are an MHFA Champion. You’ll also get a copy of the Line Managers' Resource, an invaluable source of advice on how to support an employee experiencing mental ill health.
-
Half Day CourseOur half day course is an introductory four hour session to raise awareness of mental health. It is designed to give: • An understanding of what mental health is and how to challenge stigma • A basic knowledge of some common mental health issues • An introduction to looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing • Confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue
2. 1 year follow up option
This allows those trained, the chance to take their initial learnings back into the workplace, have an opportunity to embed them before coming back together with their training cohort to refresh their learnings and ask any questions.
3. On completion of training, each delegate will receive full contact details of a We are Hummingbird instructor.
This will allow ongoing support and 1:1 guidance during the individuals' role as a Mental Health First Aider should they require it.
The benefit of this is not just that our trained Mental Health First Aiders can feel assured that they are not alone in their role as a Mental Health First Aider but also that they can confidentially collaborate and pull on years of expertise from a qualified instructor should they need to do so.
SUICIDE FIRST AID (SFA)
Teaching the theory and practice of suicide intervention skills that can be applied in any professional or personal setting, captured in a one-day event accredited by City and Guilds of London. We use only the most experienced suicide prevention trainers to deliver this unique learning experience: for anyone who seeks greater understanding and confidence to intervene with people at risk of suicide.
SFAUSI is comprised of 4 parts, each approximately 90 minutes duration. The programme teaches and practices the skills and knowledge needed to identify someone who may be thinking about suicide and competently intervene to help create suicide-safety as a first-aid approach.
Taught over 6 hours using tutor facilitated Socratic learning, tutor-led role-play, mini-lectures, group work exercises and audiovisual presentations. This is a highly interactive and emotionally engaging learning experience.
ARMED FORCES
(MHFA)
MHFA training courses teach people to spot the symptoms of mental health issues, offer initial help and guide a person towards support.
MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.
Developed in collaboration with the UK’s leading military support charities, Armed Forces MHFA is tailored to the unique culture and mental health needs of the military community. For everyone in the armed forces community – serving and ex-serving personnel, their families and support organisations.
Our training gives you the skills to:
-
Stop a preventable health issue from escalating by spotting and addressing it early
-
Know-how and where to access treatment if it’s needed, for a faster recovery
-
Help keep yourself, the people you support, your colleagues and your family healthy
-
Minimise the impact of mental ill-health on work and life
